Scalloping is an annual event for a large number of Nelson and Tasman residents so I decided it was about time I checked it out! Miriam and Aaron took a day off work and we headed up into the Abel Tasman National Park to check out the Seals and Bird life and onto a remote beach for lunch where the only other inhabitants where a couple of seagulls…one being seriously over weight!
We headed back towards Kaiteriteri where fishing is allowed. Out came the scallop dredge and we proceeded to make several passes over the ocean bed to find scallops. We managed to get around 20 scallops, which is pitiful…. the daily allowance is 50 per person! Check out the photos in the photo gallery.
We were not too worried as we had a wonderful day on the sea and headed home for a BBQ.
We are determined to try again, with ears listening in on the locals to see where we might be more successful. We have had a tip-off and hope to head out again this week.
